Mary Scott: A Life of Service, Heart, and Community

Service

Please join us in celebrating Mary Scott — Go! Augusta's March Community Spotlight!

Mary Scott has been a cherished presence in Augusta since 1954, shaping the community not through titles or recognition but through her steady gift of time, service, and heart. For decades, she has poured her energy into helping local businesses and neighborhood efforts flourish. Her dedication shines most brightly at Sugar Shane’s Café, where she volunteered countless hours to help remodel and reopen the beloved gathering place. Today, she continues to welcome familiar faces, greet newcomers, and build the friendships that make Augusta feel like home.

Community

To Mary, a strong community is built on resources and activities for all ages, because that’s where connection begins—and friendships follow. One of her favorite local traditions is the Augusta Car Show, where she loves admiring the classic cars and old pickups that bring back memories and spark conversations.

Mary enjoys the quiet of her mornings, cheering on the Wichita State Shockers, and watching uplifting movies—The Sound of Music being a longtime favorite. She often shares how proud she is to be an American, and her dream trip would take her to Washington, D.C., especially to celebrate the Fourth of July in the nation’s capital.

Heart

Her dedication to Augusta shines through in every chapter of her life. Helping remodel and reopen Sugar Shane’s Café—and seeing how it thrives today—makes every bit of her effort feel worthwhile. She loves that Augusta offers so many places to shop that she rarely needs to make the trip to Wichita. When she first arrived in 1954 with a friend, Coopers quickly became her favorite store, and she still treasures the pieces of jewelry she purchased there all those years ago.

Mary spent 28 years working at Walmart, where she met countless people—many of whom she still sees today as customers at the café or during deliveries. Those familiar faces have become friends, and reconnecting with people she has known for decades is one of her greatest joys.

To Mary, Augusta is a great place—full of history, heart, and the kind of community that feels like family.
