Non-Profit Spotlight: Core Community Augusta & Mark Kenyon
Supporting Community
Go! Augusta is proud to shine this month’s Non-Profit Spotlight on Core Community Augusta and Director Mark Kenyon, a longtime Augusta resident whose dedication to service continues to strengthen the heart of our community.
Mark’s impact extends far beyond his role as director. Deeply committed to giving back, he invests his time mentoring, encouraging, and supporting others—especially through Core Community Augusta. He volunteers consistently, champion the organization’s mission. Mark serves on community boards and committees including the Augusta Community Caring Center, Bright Futures of Augusta, and Haverhill Christian Church.
Mark moved to Augusta for work in 1991 and believes a strong community is one that takes pride in its City. Personally, he enjoys local car shows, spending time at City Lake and Santa Fe Lake, and dreaming about the next family vacation with his wife, kids and grandkids. He can often be found cheering on young family members as Orioles and Bluejays, or watching KU basketball.
Supporting Augusta
Since 2017, Core Community Augusta has helped participants build stability, increase income, reduce debt, and move toward self-sufficiency—creating meaningful, lasting change for both individuals and the community as a whole. Mark’s work reflects Core Community Augusta’s vision to empower individuals and families to create lasting change. His willingness to show up, serve, and lead with compassion embodies the spirit of connection and care that defines Augusta at its best.
From the beginning, Core Community Augusta has been supported by a caring community often asking, “What can we do to help?” Ongoing needs include meal sponsors for 30–40 participants on Monday nights and childcare volunteers. The organization’s approach is not to fix, but to support—offering classes, encouragement, and practical tools with a primary goal of increasing income while strengthening other areas of life.
One powerful example of this support came when families, not wanting to miss class, arrived with just enough gas to get there, trusting they would find a way home. On multiple occasions, Mark personally made trips with a gas can to ensure they returned home safely. Stories like this highlight the heart behind the mission—meeting people where they are and walking alongside them. What continues to inspire the Core team is seeing participants gain confidence and renewed hope as financial stress lessens, allowing them to set goals and create the life they deserve.
Serving Augusta
Whether mentoring, collaborating on local initiatives, or volunteering at community events, Mark brings the heart of a teacher and a spirit of service that uplifts those around him.
