Double Digits - Power of Words June Session
Creative Writing for Ages 10+
Double Digits is Lily Lake's community for ages 10–14, built as part of the Homeschool Collective for the kids who have outgrown a lot of what's available but aren't done needing a place that's theirs.
As a community that believes childhood should remain untrammeled, we created space for big kids to play, explore, and create alongside peers who are in the same season of life. The Power of Words is the curriculum anchoring Double Digits this summer, and June's session is the Short Story Workshop. Nine meetings, Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 2 through June 30, led by Ms. Maggie, a former high school English teacher who brings a Bachelor's in Secondary English Education from Wichita State and a kinesthetic, hands-on approach to everything she does.
The work builds week to week through sensory writing, character development, setting, plot structure, peer editing, and publication, and every student finishes with a bound, illustrated short story they read aloud at the Author's Showcase on June 30.
What students take away:
- A published short story they wrote, edited, illustrated, and bound themselves
- Skills in sensory writing, character development, plot structure, and self-editing
- Experience giving and receiving real peer critique
- A public reading at the Author's Showcase with family and community in the room
- Language for emotions and identity that follows them well beyond the page
